Ich habe schon lange keinen Review mehr geschrieben, obwohl ich noch zwei Programme in der Queue bzw. auf meinem PDA habe. Also wird es Zeit :). Diesmal gehts um Pocket Earth. Mit diesem Programm von den Blue Point Sudios holt man sich die Welt in die Hosentasche. Quasi der Mini-Globus zum immer dabeihaben. Die Animation der Erdkugel, die frei dem Stylus bewegt werden kann ist beeindruckend. Auch ein Zoom in einzelne Länder ist möglich, wenn auch nicht gaaanz so detailliert wie bei Google Earth, aber das wäre auf dem PocketPC wirklich zuviel verlangt (noch!). Sehr schön sieht man auch wo gerade auf der Welt Tag und Nacht ist und man kann die Karte politisch oder geographisch einfärben lassen. Über die Karten kann man auch die Positionen bestimmter Städe einblenden oder sich die aktuelle GPS-Position anzeigen lassen. Ein Nettes Feature ist auch die Anzeige von historischen Routen (z.B. von Columbus und Magelan) oder die Einblendung von Vulkanen oder Ozeanen. Ein Navigationssystem spart man sich mit Pocket Earth zwar nicht, aber für den Wissendurst zwischendrin ist Pocket Earth ein nettes Programm. Den Preis von ca. 19€ finde ich persönlich ein bischen zu hoch, in jedem Fall ist es ein sehr professionelles Gimmick.

Ein Handy hält bei mir normalerweise kürzer als die Vertragslaufzeit. Das sollte bei meinen PDA’s nicht passieren. Deshalb dreht sich dieses Review um Hardware statt um Software. Aber es ist wenigstens softe Hardware 🙂 Für meinen letzten PDA (einen Dell Axim X5) hatte ich eine Krusell Ledertasche bei ebay ersteigert. Die hielt war klasse und hielt ewig! Der PDA passt haargenau in die Tasche und sie war sogar kleiner als die Originaltasche. Es gibt Aussparungen für alle Anschlüsse am PDA und aufgrund des guten Designs muß man das gerät praktisch nicht mehr aus der Tasche nehmen. Das scheint auch für andere PDA-Marken so zu sein. Seit kurzem habe ich einen O2-Xda mini aka Qtek s100 und ich bin wieder sehr zufrieden mit der Tasche. Fazit: jeden Euro Wert (ra / 08.11.05)

At this place a review about a Cocktail Program is supposed to be. Altough there are a couple of Shareware Programs and i really wanted to find one, i failed to install and evaluate them. I started with "Bartender 4.0" from L3Solutions. After installation the program prompted that i have to install AppForge Booster. Unfortunately this program is not distributed any more by AppForge. Next i tried to install "Pocket Bartender" from Neohand. The program required some Visual Basic Extensions, but i did not find any further installation instructions. Finally i downloaded and installed "Bartender’s Drink Encyclopedia" from Town Compass LLC, but the evaluation licence was to restricted to really test the program. I will keep on looking, maybe someone can give me a tip? (ra / 02.11.05)

I finally found one: IM Cocktails of INSIDEMind. It looks very professional and the Installation process was straight forward. There are plenty of different Cocktails and you can enter the available ingredients to find a suitable drink. Unfortunately an error (System.ArgumentException) occured, when i tried to perform this search. Some clicks later i had to make a soft reset because IM Cocktails was freezed. Maybe this error depends on my particular system installation (ra / 02.11.05)

eWallet from Ilium Software is a professional password keeper program. Base of this test was the full version of eWallet 3.1. There are two programs available, a dektop-version of eWallet as well as a PocketPC version. The installation process is quite easy an intuitive. The user gets a lot of different card types for things that should be secret like „ID Card“, „Password“, „Insurance Policy“ and your girlfriends „cloth size“. You can access all entered data by one master password. The user interface is decorated with a lot of very nice icons and it makes fun to use. The program is very stable and does not require much system ressources. 128bit encryption ensures that your secret data can be savely kept. A backup of your passwords is very simple. You just have to copy the encrypted data file to a memory card. The only functional drawback i realized is that there seems to be no timeout for your login. That means, that if you loose your PDA and you were too confused to explicily logout/close the program after the last use, anyone can see your secrets. But hopefully the finder needs to make a hard reset because he doesn’t know the system password of your Pocket PC 🙂 The second drawback is, that the eWallet is quite expensive (compared to other password keeper programs) and that the dektop-version was not included in the price of the PDA-version.
